What is SBIRT?

SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. SBIRT is a healthcare screening process used to prevent alcohol and/or drug use from negatively impacting your health.

	SCREENING Annually, when visiting your healthcare professional for a regular appointment, you will be asked a few questions about your alcohol and drug use. Your healthcare professional reviews your responses and shares the screening results with you.
	BRIEF INTERVENTION Together with your healthcare professional, you may talk more about low-risk use, benefits and barriers to reducing your alcohol and/or drug use, and discuss steps to reduce your risks related to alcohol and/or drug use and improve your health.
	REFERRAL TO TREATMENT When an individual could benefit from additional services, the healthcare professional will provide a referral for specialized treatment services.
