Screening
Screening is a way for healthcare providers to quickly understand a patient’s level of risk from harmful behaviors or negative outcomes. It can focus on substance use, mental health, or other concerns. Most of the time, screening is conducted using a set of questions (“screening tool”) designed to learn more about a patient. Brief Intervention
A brief intervention (BI) is a short conversation. When screening indicates that a patient or client has a level of risk beyond “minimal” or “no” risk, their provider may attempt to initiate a BI. While there are many different approaches to BIs, they are usually intended to intervene around motivation or ambivalence to change.
